Shri C.M. Gandhi is a man of vision with a crystal clear personality. He was born on 15th January, 1924 at Tajpur village near Botad in Saurashtra. He did his schooling in kalyan and in Bombay but could not afford to finish his preliminary studies. He started working with his father in a grocery shop but then that was not his cup of tea. He launched his own business of transportation of coal ash and then ventured into construction activity. After that, he has not looked back. He steered the Gandhi Group and helped many relatives to stand on their own feet.
Even though he progressed well in life, and in subsequent years in the city of Bombay, he never forgot his humble beginning in Kalyan where he spent his childhood and formative years. It is his repayment of a debt which he holds close to his heart, that led him to donate 2 acres of prime land in the heart of the city of Kalyan to the Kalyan Education Society for the construction of a school building.
He is extremely keen that the children of Kalyan and neighbouring areas be provided facilities for a good education. The entire Gandhi family took part in this project in the memory of their loving mother. His eldest daughter Dr. Pramila Bhatia was the most motivating force behind the project and the designing of the School building was done by his youngest son, Shri Rajesh Gandhi, a qualified architect. It was also the unsparing and untiring efforts of Naresh and Sailesh which got the project going into this magnificent edifice as it stands today. This is the third educational institution (school) from the Gandhi family.
The earlier two are-
• Manilal Kasturchand Gandhi School, Kalyan
• Manilal Kasturchand Gandhi School, Tajpur, Saurashtra
He has donated to Matushri Bhuriben Manilal Gandhi Chhatralaaya Tajpur and for Smt. Kantaben Chandulal Gandhi Nursing Home, Sion. He is also involved in supporting the needy and deserving patients at Sion hospital which he visits nearly every day.
He believes in the ideals of Mahavir i.e. “Service to humanity is Service to God.” He is ever-ready to extend help for any medical cause and education for the needy and deserving.
Apart from his philanthropic activities, he is actively involved in a social group named Garden Group where he is known as “Bal-Kanhaiya”, young at heart, energetic and dynamic.
He married Kantaben at an early age. He has three daughters, Dr Pramila, Harsha and Rekha and three sons, Naresh, Sailesh and Rajesh, three daughters in law- Renu, Prita and Alka. Besides, he has 10 grandchildren.
As he did not receive any formal education on account of economic constraints, building educational institutions is an activity very dear to his heart and which he pursues and cherishes. Specially his school is his life time achievement
